No, government and democracy may be a really terrible system, but it is the best we got for now. There are a tremendous amount of flaws in the system and the government nowadays, however, there is nothing better than what we have now.
If we take out the government system, what is it that will take care of the people and ensure security? True, politics are corrupt and there are unfair deals and money trade everywhere around the world. However, if you take away all these systems, what's left to protect the regular citizens? Military control might take over, the greed of people will rise over law and becomes power. Whoever have the most and strongest military power over the citizens can control the world. Once that happens, a tyrannical government becomes in power against. There is no way that government can be eliminated until the dark hearts of human can be eradicated.
The greed and desire for control in everyone's heart is something that can lead the world into corruption and hell. Then what is it that we should do? I believe there are much better government been thought out by someone, but because of the majority rule policy thing, some of the people in the high don't want to risk the fact they might lose power. They will all look forward to gaining control, and reject the better government that might make the world a better place, but they have to give up their power.

Journal 34: Theme of Self-Reliance
Emmerson, the great poet uses numerous figure of speech in his poems. When i look at his stuff, it takes me quite alot of extra time to identify all of the figure of speech or half of them. His work is quite deep, it takes deep analysis and extra attention to idfentify all of them.
These deep anaylisis allows me, the reader to see something that is more than just figure of speech. It's much deeper and intriguing than the other stuff where you just flap and go.
Emmerson uses alot of abstract ideas in his writings. His writing is about self reliance, he compares the society to stock holders in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shreholder.
THen he talks about how self reliance is something that likes names and customs but love and reality. Due to the love for names and custom, individualism might slowly fade away and lead the world to corruption.
Emmerson believe that the world is at the point where its corrupted. THe world dislike individuality than self reliance.

Journal 33: Imagery in Nature
After that long journal yesterday, im getting lazy for another journal. daaaaaaaaaaang
so back to the journal topic, Emerson evaluates the soceity as something of great evil. You know how the romantics are, nature good, nature bless, civilization bad, civilization no no bad bad. He take the human soceity as something of great evil with conspiracy and dark human thoughts.
Romantics take the nature as sort of a place where God presides. He expressed his opnion in his thing telling us that we should elave the city. In order to be secluded from this horrifying soceity with evil lurking everywhere, we need to move out of it. Living in the forest to be protected from the dark urban city.
In the start, he also talked about the stars as nature. The nature is like God, pure and holy where the star is so high up. That pureness and like Gode, is beyond our reach and we cant reach it cause its so high up there.
Nature is magnificent, it changes its shape and looks all the time. The magnificent nature is something that we shall not destroy. WHile nowadays, we're cutting off trees, killing mountains and sucking up water. The world is being sabatoged by us. We need to stop this nonsense to the world becasuse its all part of GOd.

Journal 32: The Saddest of All Prisons
Yes, people definitely feel great guilt to what they have done in the past. If a person can't forgive themselves for what they have done in the past, it is of great burden to the people around them and for themselves. The dark secrets of a person could slowly eat away one's heart or consious. That's kind of why some people would go mad because of a past mistake they have commited and turn into someone else. I believe this journal is refering to the corss of snow since longfellow couldn't forgive himself for bringing such tragedy to his wife.
He is extremely sad for probably lighting his wife on fire. He wishes that this mistake could be reverted so bad that he stopped writing nature poems or other poems but mourn in the grief of his wife. Lots of people suffer problems like this, such as in a movie, the killer never take holiday or something. The main character killed a kid by accident, ever since that, he repent for his sins day and night and could not do anything with a child. He felt great sorrow for the kid and in the end even sacrificed his life for a kid. I think, or did a midget helped him took a bullet for him. I can't quite remember what happen in the movie. However, it talked about the burdens of a person and how he tried everything to repent for it.

Journal Entry 17: The American Romantic Hero
yeah i do agree with the heros old romantics. The hero back in the romantic times feels like real adventurous people that could actually do something instead of just looking pretty. THe hero that are treasured and view as famous today are people that look pretty to be on TV. I don't know if they could actually be productive or survive in the wild, but i just feel that they dont feel like real actual heros in life. The qualities of a hero should be the concern for others and do what is right.
If you care so much as waht the others want and what the others think is right, then probally what they believe in is wrong. You have to have the courage to stand up for what you believe in to become a hero. The hero in the movies kinda suit the purpose, but alot of the people that are consider hero or heroines are just pretty celebrities. so i dont really agree with them as heros and people that have unique qualities.
The romantic heroes are out in the wild battling their butts of with the wild, they stand for what they believe to some extent so i guess they are a kind of hero.

Journal 31: Comparing Poems
Dammit man, stupid home internet connection. THis is the second time im doing this journal.
So i was talking about how two event on different person could casue great differences. Thats say someone from the streets die, you might not feel as much sorrow as the man from the street's loved ones. It works the same way for Henry's poems. Henry talks about the situation of his wife beng dead and the man on the beach. The man can be just somee random guy walking by, he dont feeel as much thing as other people might do. However, the one that died is Henry's wife and from the description of Mr.mccool gave us, it might be that Henry caused his wife's death himself. In that case, it would cause Henry to feel even deeper griefs than someone killing her or she deid herself.
My attitude toward death is quite curious.Death is not a color of black for me, it is a purple instead. Purple had this dark feeling toward it with the red inside. It also mixes the airy and lighty blue inside to mix with the red. This mix of color and feeling is just what i feel for death, mysterious. Im curious to what lies after the process of my heart stopping and brain stops. Is there really the soul in one's body? you never know. If a soul is true, then all that wild imagination and fantasy that i have read about where one dies and reincarnate into a ghost and dwell the world could be true! You might become some special ghost and relive this world. You might go on a supreme journey to the heavenly paradise for endless pleasure and good life. The realm after death is unpredictable, death shouldn't be view as something simply as a cycle or tragic thing.

Journal 30: Image of Grief
THe first image that popped into my head was a mountain for grief. I thought abou the high mountain as a lonely individual. Nobody could reach the tall mountain and interact with it to understand it. If you put the mountain as a person, its as if his sorrow is something that other people can't reach to. The grief that the mountain has is something that nobody could reach upon or feel. Even though many people could be a part of this incident or grief, its still something that is personal and only one could understands.
My second image is a dying tree that is twisted. I saw quite alot of pictures of trees on the middle of the mountain where the travelers had to cross over. The wind was blowing on the tree so much that it caused the tree to twist into this wierd and uneasy shape that man force cannot have caused it. Grief is something that could hurt a person greatly through the passage of time. It gets stronger adn stronger and one day the person would snap or become twisted. The tree gets blown by the wind so much it doesn't look like a tree anymore. A person could be tortured by the grief so much that it affects its natural thinking on a situation where it becomes distorted and wrong.
The next image is a dark cave. Grief can make someone do unspeakable or crazy things. What lies in this cave called grief is mysterious and you will never know what would happen. Maybe there's a hole in the front, maybe there are spikes on the ceilings that will fall, or maybe there are animals inside the cave that would hunt you down. The cave called grief is a place that oridinary men should not tresspass and unpredictable things are inside it.

Journal 29: Human Life: A Cycle?
No, i view the human life as one big test of your abilities. The abilty of the mind to see if you are able to live this life to your best potential and be distinctive of yourself to this world. Make this world a little bit different, regardless of if this fame or difference is notoreity or great achievement. If you fail to make yourself as someone different from everyone, then you are just merely another cycle. This lasting impression doesn't have to be something that will be inside everybody's mind, it can be a group of people, a friend, or someone special that will remember you for the rest of thier life and change because of you.
What i mean by change is not by something like personality or love change. I meant something like the difference of thought, decision taking or what they will accomplish.
I got this thought from the recent movie that was the bomb. "You are the apple in my eye", the main character, giddens changed my view of being someone special to someone that could make a difference in the world. Be someone that can make the world a little bit different because the world have you.
It opened to my mind for the goal of achieving something significant.
I believe, you are just a mere cycle, or even just something in this world that lives for nothing if you can't make yourself stand out. Be someone unique, and leave this cycle of birth and death. History is written by the victors, not by some freaking oridinary guy from the streets.
Make your legend, regardless of big or small or it would just last in one person's mind. Make your mark in the great hurricane called history and be someone that is unforgettable.
Why do i stress making a mark so incredibly significant? Because your body and belongings will be passed on and will not be yours anymore. However, if you can make a difference, it is something that lasts in people's minds, its never going to go away because people will do something and be reminded of you. A idea, a belief, or something that is significant can become a ideaology that will last.
Plato isn't remembered as a bearded man with blue robes, his remembered by the allegory of the caves. His ideas and philosophy left a hige mark in history for the people in later times have to study him, think about the thoughts he was having and how the soceity is presented such as in the allegory of the caves. To break free the shackles means to be not a part of the cycle, you are yourself.

Journal 27: More Thanatopsis
Bryant views the life of human as a not so significane being. Well, he stresses more on what is nature, the being of nature and what would we do or happen after we die. In comparing the poem of Ann Bradstreet and Bryant's poem, Ann Bradstreet only focus on the material being and the idea behind death.
Bryant discusses more than the simple idea of death. He elaborated more on the part where the matters of human being stays and the cycle of nature. Anne Bradstreet talks about the soul being eternal. The man's soul will travel to receive the judgement of God and that we might all just sugger in hell. Byrant's idea behind the soul is more optimistic than that of Anne Bradstreet's. Bryant's idea was that all men can receive slavation in the end. They will travel to heacen or a big abysss when they die. When we die, we get to rest with all the glorious nobles that died before we did.
Anne Bradstret believe that all thing fades in the end besides our soul. The material beings in the world we are living now doesn't matter at all. God gave it to us, and he have the same right to take it away from us. Bryant had the same similar idea as Anne Bradsreet. Nothing stays forever, your soul will stay, but your material and body will fade into darkness.
The matters stays and go into a cycle in nature. Your soul stays and go into a huge caraven going to the realm of death.

Journal 26: Thanatopsis
Complicated journal, i dont know if i can fill up this whole 200 page, i mean words.
I believe what Bryant says, the earth is a living organism. His view is like a mix of western and eastern thoughts. it had the belongings of God idea and also the idea behind incarnation. The incarnation idea took in just matters and earthy atomical belongings while the spirit is long gone dead like what the Puritans took in. Instead of being judged, the spirits go into this long long sleep with the other great people that died in the world. We fade into darkness, into the mud and become the soil. I dont know, i have a similar view just as he does, but the spirit goes into the cycle of rebirth just like the matters.
We are judged in the end by God as well, it just depends on which God you believe in and what God you want to show your allegiance.
Everytime we are done being judged, we are reassign a new role in the next world to fulfill our duties. If we can fulfill our dutires, we either rise up or we go into rebirth again for a higher purpose. If we dont fulfill the promise, we get lower down, or even become nothing in a blink of an eye .

Journal 25: Natural Cycle
The natural cycle, exists everywhere. The natural cycle doesnt just exist in the nature, this is a cycle that is rooted deep in the lives of everything. Everything goes through the process of birth, growth, death, and rebirth.
A bird is born, living happily and grows stronger each day. When it is about to die, a wolf comes along and ate it. The bird dies, its energy flows into the wolf to give him the energy to continue life for a rebirth of a new wolf. The energy is transfer through the wolf into a new wolf as a process of energy rebirth. You can call it spiritual rebirth as well. All cycle continues this way, this works for man too.
A tree grows into a big tree. It gets cut down by man, and its made into a chair. The energy of the tree is being reused or rebirth through a chair. Its man made, i dont know if it still has a spiritual energy inside.
I tend to believe alot in the spiritual energy in things i dont know why.
I was just looking at the bird diagram i was drawing for this journal, and i kind of feel the energy process is quite interesting.
The small birds are great in size against the population of the wolfs. I remember that when the energy is being transfer from one animal, it usually loses alot of it dduring the process. However, becasue of this, we mantain a set amount of strong so the weak won't be completely wiped out. While the birds could produce quite fast but limited by the strong. The nature have its own rules, and these rules somehow also applies to man. The majority of people are middle low class, the upper class keeps the pressure up so that not everyone is rich. A pressure have to be maintained so that one doesn't get stronger than the other one, causing a collapse on the poewr structure. There's much more for this idea i ahve right now, and i find it pretty interesting but thats it for today's journal

Journal 24: Freedom and Equality
I think its pretty free, i dont know too much about the political or any dark "deeds" that America have, but judging from what the people could d now is pretty free i guess. If you ask the same question to people maybe 50 years or something before, they would probably say no. First, the women rights movement, then the black civil rights, and also the slavery all the way back to the civil war times. THese events all shows that un equal and unfreedom soceity that America used to have.
THese are really important qualities to me. If i dont have the freedom and equality i have now, i can imagine my life being pretty much really different. Starting from freedom, i havbe the freedom that the blacks didnt have 50 years ago. I can eat and sit anywhere i feel like. I get to drink or party anywhere i want. The only thing that is restricting me on doing some crazy ass stuff is laws and my own perosnal moral.
Equality goes the same direction. The two quality actually ties themselves quite close together. If you don't have equality, you don't have freedom. I get to do the same thing in the U.S or in Taiwan as anyone else can. I can vote and stuff, there's no actual racial discrimination in asians and whites or blacks in Taiwan. If you're in America, there might still be some.
There are not much things restricting my life. The only thing is law and i guess for me currently now is scores. Any scores or records prevents me from living my life full out. How am i going to break these bounds? you can't, if you break free from the bounds of law, then the world will be a mess.

this is an interesting blog, because i dont have much to say about these two story in the connections. Why is this interesting? cause i might wander into some random things again. I don't see much in common with the sermon and the story. First, i didnt all that much about God in the story of Tom Walker. I thought it tied more to the puritan belief of the devil than that of the belief with God.
When i was reading the story, what was in my mind was like a dark fantasy story rather than a supernatural justice. I dont refcall any super natural justice, the justice was the greed of man in the hearts of Tom Walker and his heart being taken away. The devil might even be said to be the justice that took the heart and the greed of Tom Walker and that him travel/bound to earth for eternity, not being able to heaven or hell.
With the last idea, i still dont see the connection of God and the story of Tom Walker. There was no sdescription of praying to God or the belief in God or christianity in the whole story. It talked about the black man, the life of the wife and Tom, and the different versions of the story. In the end of the story, i still didnt see any connection of the story to the sermon. The only thing i could say about the Sermon and the story to have in common is probably the part about romantics. TO some extent, you might say god is dressed in the devil's gown to punish Tom Walker i guess. The dark form is his fury within.

Journal 22: The Devil and Tom Walker
i don't actually know how to classify this as a Romantic story. I mean, thos story does have the nature setting as the background, but for this to be a complete romantic story it should have more. This feel more like amn straight out allegory or myth rather than be classified as a Romantic story.
The reason why i classify this as a tale or a myth is by the way he wrote it. Throughout the story, the author gave out many intrepretations and describing the situation or the tale of various occasions. It's not like an regular story where it continues on without stopping for some detail of the background. As i mentioned, if it was a contemporary writer writing this, much detail would add in about the whole story rather than some wierd quotations such as, "the story was told through numerous versions, but however this is the one told most eetc etc" The moment this thing came up, i was thinking to myself, hmmmm, this sounds like a tale or a myth for children not to be greedy.
The ending and treament wouldn't be so different, i mean from the rasicism? i don't feel as much and as strong. The part with the indians is understandable, since numerous tales or things have depicted them with involvement in something such as rituals. So that's kind of still in the proper minds of people. Besides that, i don't feel much racisim is implanted in the story afterall.

Journal 21: Darkness
Easily said, im a dark romantic as well. I might look like a man of optimism but when it is something about preceiving the world and the signs, i don't usually view them as good signs. The intrepretation for the signs of Trnascendatalist and the other people that they proclaim signs of God is kind of a belief. This belief can be just like the belief that regular people have regarding of symbols and signs. The smashing of a mirror, black cat, a raven, and numerous things in the world can be perceived as signs of God and the nature.
When it comes to these signs, i dont usually view them as natural or even as good signs. The signs or ideas behind that God is there is like a warning to me on something is going to happen. When i break my nails, its like a sign that tells me something bad is going to happen today, and most of the times its true.
This might sound like something a person is thinking in mind, but i believe its true. For some optimistic people, they might say the more you think about these signs as a trouble, the more likely they will become trouble. THen what if you think they are not and they turn out to be? first your heart will sink even further for what you thought was not true. Second the impact would go even greater. Having an idea of what is about to come is not something can rasie my own awareness. I view things in a dark way, i might look bright on the outside, but too many things happen to me to change my thoughts into a dark romantic. Being vulnerable is not a good thing.

Journal 20: Compare Heroes
i feel like i've done this journal already before, didn't we?
the idea is quite the same from the last or the journal before the last. The romantic heroes and the heroes or treasuered celebrities are completely different comparing the tewo periods. Starting with the heroes in the romantics time. The hero during the romantics are people like Indiana Jones. What's treasured is his virtues of wild and adventurous in the wild. He doesn't need six packs or a hot face to grab the attention of the young teenagers.
As we talk about the heroes today, the wild qualities required during the romantics have disappeared. In exchange, what's loved and rewarded is muscle, nudity, and being hot. One just actually have to be beautiful to be consider a famous hero. As in the asain pop culture, girls just have to show their tits and they can get high appreciation. We can see alot of these celebrities showing their naked photos and shwooooooooooooooooooooosh they became the most famous, the most loved, and the most interesting. Like seriously, even the boys as well. They show their muscles to the girls or pretended to have a sex scene in their shows and everybody starts to look at them. Now, the wild isn't something treasured, nudity, or actually sexuality contents are looked at and treasured.

Journal Entry 19: Strengths and Weaknesses
Interesting topic, what is one's weakness and their strength? I believe in the soul, i don't care what the scientists say about how there is no such thing as the soul, i won't fight about it.
i believe that each men and women is born with a soul, well, anything that is from nature or something. Well, this is a complicated topic for what things have soul and what does not. Anyway, back to the unknown qualities. With the soul of each thing, it have a distinct personality. This might have something to do with what you were in your last life, but their is no limitation to the unknown quality of a person.
The only limitation you have is how long can you live? a person can excel at everything even if they don't show passion to all of it adn excel. This is only if they have enough time to focus on all this thing. They might invent a way to create a invention that helps the whole world, become the next Da Vinci or whatever, they have endless possibilities.
However, with the soul and its personality they are born with, this determines what they will "Do" or "Excel" first. There is no limit as to what challenge could open up that door to the endless possibility. This is something of personal limits. A challenege might be fit for one, but if its a quality test that another soul had accquired or inhabitted, then it does not matter to them.
These challeneges have to be something unexpected that they encounter in mind. This is not a test that someone can make it up, it has to be something real, something they have to expierence without any help.
I think my strength is the ability to adapt. You can throw me into any soceity and i will find a way to live among and part of them. THen what is my soul? I don't know, you will never know what you soul is, this is something unknown to human beings, thats say it like this, these are qualities that we have not thought about, its as if this is something that God purposely blocked us away from understadning them.
My weakness? i don't actually know, i could do some pretty crazy stuff when im mad, almsot everything. When im not mad, i guess im scared of still some stuffs.

Journal Entry 18: Rational or Transcendental?”
Gotta say, this is a complicated journal for me. I was kind of confused for the topic, and i had no idea what to write in my notebook. After the class, i kinda have some idea in mind. To me, the two looks like opposites. The rationalists believed in the city. Civilization, reasons, and logic guides them through their lives. They like civilization, with logics and reasons, they find their creation "city" the best place to live and be with God. For them, God is in this world, somewhere inside reasons and logic you just gotta find him.
The transcendentalists are not like that. They believed in nature and instincts, or their self emotions i guess. They dislike the city, its not like they hate the city where they will leave it, its just that they find the spirit of God in the wild, in nature. Instead of following reasons and logics, they decide to follow their heart.
I am definitely, and i i mean definitely a transcendatalist. I do not believe in logics, reason, those are all crap. I would not look at a statistic data and go like, hmm my chances are or whatever im doing or evaluating with just reasons and logics. Sure, God might be inside them, but i believe everything had to do with the mind. This is a important journal to me, well, to this moment i just realized it. I do things like the transcendatalist, the extremem type i guess. I do whatever i want, i follow the rules, but i will complete the tasks according to my way. To other people, this might sound like im a non-conformist, but what i mean is that i do what my heart tells me. I will not bow under someone bigger than me, i will rise and make them bow to me (that's kind of tooooo extreme, but you get my point.) Then nature, i love the wild, the nature. I love to be in nature or like Tarzan and run naked. Im not a civilized guy, im wild, crazy, active, and i believe thats what makes me. Im definitely not a raionalist or a puritan, im a transcendentalist or rather THE WILD.

Journal Entry 13: Influential Person
Influential person are all over my life. I mean, to compare my old self to me now, like, right now, its just two totally different person. I might be really friendly to everyone when i was little, but not as now where i basically know everybody.
The person that i was going to do is Louis, but after looking at all the list of people i have, i can't really decide. For Louis, his attitude and coolness to everything changed me. Out of the three people that changed me, the one that changed me into a independent person is Louis. His the side of Logic and reason out of Luke and Jed.
Then is Christine, her passion inspired greatly. Besides Christine for the passion person, my friend Turtle monster, a artist that i met online also showed me great passion. Their love in what they like totally changed my view of things that you like. I mean, if you want to be passionate about something, they would be my role model. Are you as passionate as them? or are you just, okok with what ever you are doing now.
Dennis Potter, the one that opened my view in the artistic side. He made me love art, he was the one that opened the door of creativity in my life. I know Pamela hates him, and he probably would stop me from writing him as a influential person.
Zhu Hisn Hau, a mystrious graduate i know when i was back in elementary school. He was like, THE role model for me. He was one of the popular guys in school. He was one of the older school mates that is willing to hang out with me. Numerous incidents happened that led me to the belief of him as a inspirational person to me. He protected me from bullys qutie alot of times. He was also the one that inspired me in learning Taekwando. If it weren't for him, i wouldn't touch martial arts.
Michael Shih, a childhood friend of mine in middle and high school back in the U.S. He was the one that rebuilt my confidence everytime i was crushed. I had terrible basketball skills back in Middle school. He taught me basketball skills, stayed after school for me and taught me homework, sports, and games. Back in that time, he was a straight A student and the top basketball player the school can have. However, right now, he stopped his basketball, he stopped his grades into a c average. Sigh, i don't know what happened to him, i wish he could get back up as my hero again.
Bad and influential person?
definitely
One is Duncan, the cool guy in my elementary years. He was the one that call me when he needed me, and threw me away when he don't need me. He bullied me before in elementery years, and i had to be in the same middle school when i came back to Taiwan. He was a bad influenec to me not just in bullying me. He did some nasty shit to me, and made me do some nasty shit to other people. he smokes, skips schools, in a gang, basically any kind of wrong and illegal stuff he done it before. He uses the money of his grandfather to survive, and he got kicked out of school last year. Currently in Canada.

Journal Entry 17: The American Romantic Hero
from what the book said, the values during that time value people in the wild. People with bulging muscles, fighting nature or wierd aliens are probably the hero. However, in the soceity now, values hotness. How how are you? the hotness will make your place in the soceity rise and fall. I mean, you probably could look not so hot but kickass and people loves you. In the century now, those people have lost their edges and are going down hill. They are consider as legends, but not the popular ones that people will think about first. That's take the asian society. They would look guys with a hot face rather than if they actually have talent. The face is everything in their caraer. Take the western society, i know some people think Jessica Alba is good, but for realz, she can't act. Her acting sucks in alot of movies, and people knows it. Does anybody care? no, she's hot, that chick is built from the hilt. She's so dam sexy that i would drool over her. People look at her body and face not her acting skills. If Megan Fox or Jessica Alba was at the time of the romantics, she probably wouldn't be as popular. They don't engage in nature, they don't kill natives or barbarians. They simply act hot, show their sexiness and take the check. Being hot is what matters most in the modern society. Besides being hot, nothing really matters. Well, that is if you are aiming to just succeed in the entertaiment part. If its the real life, someone like Natalie Portman wins, the hotness and the brains. Ok another example, most distinctive feature, the taiwanese celeberties. The boobs are what brings out their fame, after that, they dies out. Whenever a girl shows her D size, E size, or boobies they can become famous. Once they are famous, they started doing posters, concerts, and they seal up their boobies again. Once they sealed it up, they are no longer popular in the industry. Unless they really did have a hit in the cds, but from what i see, laterly no one can mantain fame. They don't have the skills to maintain their popularity.

Journal Entry 16: Intro to Romanticism
This is probably the most annoying journal entry ever.
The values of the Romantics were:
Favoring nature over cities- They loved to include nature in their books, music, poetry, and art. In Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote about living with nature expressing that it was better to live in an isolated cabin rather than near people. Walt Whitman wrote about nature in his poem

A change in the thought processes of the time, from reason and science to use of imagination and respect for nature, in the American and French revolutions spurred national pride with new found feelings of liberty, expression of oneself, and freedom.
The first transcedentalists believed that the spirit transcended the physical being but could only be realized through one's own intuition- not from organized religion. Some say they shared beliefs with early socialists.
Part of the Romantic movement (see Romanticism), it developed around Concord, Mass., attracting individualistic figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott. Transcendentalist writers and their contemporaries signaled the emergence of a new national culture based on native materials, and they were a major part of the American Renaissance in literature. They advocated reforms in church, state, and society, contributing to the rise of free religion and the abolition movement and to the formation of various utopian communities, such as Brook Farm. Some of the best writings by minor Transcendentalists appeared in The Dial.

Journal Entry 15: The American Ideal
The americans fought for their own future. The reason why that phrase by Ralph links to the american ideal is because of the history of the americans. The early colonists had to stood up against the British government in the start of the revolution without the help of other nations. They made their own ammo, guns, and cities against the well armed and prepared british governemnt. Earlier this class, Romanticism was mentioned. Romanticism is the period of a kind of self discovery period for people. The noble savage is what it means. I can't really understand or see the connection between the quote and the ideas of Romanicism, so its quite hard for me to write this journal.
For me, this quote feels like a DIY, do it yourself. One person had to stand up to finish his works himself rather than relying it to other people. Its like saying being independent and responsible of your own dutues.
I really don't know how i can rewrite this quote much, its about as much as it can express. The last line, we talk with our minds is like saying the freedom of expressing idea. Oh~~~ there we have another connection of the American style of thinking, the freedom of press and speech. The freedom to express ideas and the minds. That's about all the connections i can find and make, besides that i really don't know. THis might bw one of the hardest journal for me to relate and connect to~.

Journal Entry 14: Persuade Me
I will be fast and clear of what i want now, i want to get into a good college. Let's pretend you are the college board and that you can grant me the admission to any college.
The possibilities of the young teenagers this generation is unpredictable. Looking at the past few years, think about all of the influential people that died and rises that ciould motivate them. As for an example, i am one of the motivated youngster. My passion for work is beyond your imagination. You might think it is natural for a student to carry a book whenever they go, 'however, in this technology based high flying soceity, this is not common anymore. With the difference of me and the other students, i hold a book in my hand or bag wherever i go. In talking about real life expierence, i believe i am one of the best and the mostt motivated in our school. Currently, i have been exchanging art classes for english classes with my art teacher. I look for all opputunities that i can learn from and where i can succeed. Right now, im working as a interactive writer in search for potential taiwanese artists and writing their interviews and taking pictures to submit on a colloective website that interacts with schools and world wide artists around the world. Besides that, i also work as a curator for artists as well, in exchange, for nothing. It serves as a job, however i do it for the practice of english skills. Earning these reputation are also a long run for my future caraer, as you can see, theses are all signs of a potential acheiver for the soceity and world. Think about me when you are looking at the other students, i believe i surpass the average students. I am above and beyond them.

Journal Entry 13: Give Me Liberty or…
hmmmmmmm, this is quite a hard and interesting question as to what shapes us today. im guessing if people were given one word to describe what shaped me, they will definitely say women. I think love and friendship is what shapes me. Freedom is one word that shped the early americans since that was the quality that they fought for. The early americans fought all that war just for their freedom. They were self reliance on their supplies and what they could do. In this culture, the words such as music, entertainment, knowledge, expierence, and diploma shapes this future. One enjoys music and entertainment, and knowlege, expierence, and diploma is what is needed to succeed in life or to live good. When i hear liberty and freedom, i don't really feel anything. I'm already living alone and having the choice of how to live my life. I believe this satisfy one of the word that shapes the modern soceity and myself. I have expierence liberty and freedom from my parents. However this also means that i need to know what is good for me and how i should organize my life. This is a test to the person and how are they able to cope with changes around us. Now that i look at that, i realize this is also a very important quality or word in the modern soceity. Change, it is something that one needs to learn in this fast moving soceity. They need to learn how to cope with change and react to them to succeed in this world.

Journal Entry 12: Sin
For me, sin is something that you commited against your own rules. There are still some universal rules though, well, it applies to you when you were first born, you basic thoughts and morality. If you feel your actions doesn't go against your dogma or morality, then you don't commit a sin against yourself. To me, sin is like black beans. God is up there throwing a black bean whenever you have done something wrong, and a white bean for the things that you have done right or thought right. Once you die, your beans will be calculated, and you will be decided of where you soul will be. I consider rebeling your parents as a sin, however i don't know why i just do it naturally. I can't even stop myself from doing it. It was done so easily that i dont even realize it. Killing is a sin as well, well, intentional killing, if you have a purpose such as to eat, then that's another story. If you kill for fun or something that is not life meaning full, then that is consider a sin. Lying and betrayal is something against my dogma. I hate betrayal, that is also the reason i will never, in my life betray whoever is close and dear to me. No one was accused of sinning before in front of me or i have heard of it, because i believe sinning is a spiritual thing that you feel yourself. If you don't feel it, other people can't say anything about it then.

Journal Entry 11: Fear as a Motivator
I beleive, fear is the greatest motivator if you are directing people in a large sense. Like you uses fear to make other people to do things. But if you are talking couple wise, then love is the biggest. Back to fear, fear is the thing that drives people forward. The fear of failing, of being screamed at, being killed, being whatever is what makes one moves forward. You want to succedd and do something right, therefore the idea of not achievingg your goal terrifies you unintentionally and you do the thing right. Proably not terroize you, it just pushes you to do something right. In the sermon, the fear motivator is the fiery pits of hell. The fear of being in the pit of hell terrified the people to believe in christ. People did scared me to do what they want, the fear of being threatened of giving away your personal secrets. The fear that other people might not like you makes me wanna be around all people. Its kinda hard to live with no fear, since everything around might means the opposite. Machiaveli also said that fear is a great motivator and tool to rule over a country. With love comes hate, fear and honor comes together. You can be loved and hated easily, it switches around fast. However, with fear and honor, it is inscribed in other's mind and heart. It will take lots of actions to wipe fear and honor of one person. In choosing fear and love, i chose fear to motivate other people, when people are scared, they might even achieve something beyond what they thought they couldn't do

Journal Entry 10: Church, anyone?
I have been to quite alot of these religious ceremonies. In fact, i had to be there for it is a requred whole day thing when i was back in the catholic school. It was a long and tedious pain in the ass for me. It wasn't my religion, nor will it ever be i think, and the long hours of chants and singing are just tiring. The father would walk around with a strange ball in his hands, waving it around for this smell of the chinese shuan, the smell was so thick i feel i could taste it. I would sometimes hold my breath until it passes away. My butt would be sitting on the chair for an hour until the next song or chant came along, and we would all have to stand up and sing it. The soles of my foot screams in pain as i stood up and my ass would let out a relieved cry. To add some fun during the mass, some people would fart or burp during the thing while father talks, and we would all laugh quietly until the father raises his voice. By comparing these two events do u mean in the sinners of GOd? cause im not so sure. If i have to compare to other normal church activities, its quite different as well. In the sunday church, they would be all dressed up and sing interesting songs. I feel, that a sunday church is better than a mass that the catholics has. The catholic mass are tiring and long.

Journal Entry 9: Motivation
I believe that the character all behaved the specific ways in the poems due to their own belief of religions. Religion is a powerful thing, people could devote their whole life just for a chrished belief or God. They would sacriffice themselves for what they believe to be true. For me, right now, i don't remember quite of a specifric poem in mind to refer this journal back to the book. However, judging by the laws that were established for the people living inthe puritan soceity, they devoted their lives for the religion. They abaondoned the things that are beautiful and enjoying to follow their own beliefs. Just by a bible and the things wrote inside changed a community as a whole. In the poems and stories that we have read from the start of the year, different characters still have different belief on what God and their religion menas. In Anne Bradstreet, she believes that God can take everything, the real thing lies in heaven. In world in hounding me discribes the belongings in the world as nothing, something that we should not care, the real thing is in the mind. In the scarlet letter, the community basically uses the rules and ideas of the commandments as the actual laws of the city.

Journal Entry 8: Compare and Contrast: Bradstreet v Sor Juana
It has quite the same feeling and theme. Both poems talk about the possesion wealth and belongings on earth as something that is not required. In the poem of Ann Brad street, material belongings in the world are not important because she will getting more in heaven. The real life lies within heaven and not on earth. In the poem "world in hounding me", the treasures lies within the mind. It saids that wealth and treasures are not important. What's important is the gain of mind, the treasures and material belongings will fade into dust.
In the poem of Ann Bradstreet, the rhyme uses the tefchnique called "End rhyme". In the poem "world in hounding me" uses a sonnet. The abba abba rhyme scheme. Basically, the word vanity in these two poem is just in what i have discussed above. The people are not focused on the material goods, they are focussed on the goods of the mind and the level of spiritual values.

Journal Entry 7: Hounding
Seeing the last sentence of your journal prompt, i bet we will have to write a poem like that, just not sure if it is for pleasure, journal or a actual graded assignment. To be honest, i have no idea what the poem is. I missed the front part of what you were talking about the journal prompt and i forgot to bring back my book to look at the poem. To hound is to chase, if the world is chasing me, that would be pretty scary. I feel as if the poem title is hinting that this guy have some problems going through his mind now, and his not so stable. I remember there's this syndrome that the person would be scared of the world and the things that his not familiar with. The poem title seems to feel that way. Since i haven't read the poem, i really don't know. However, if i were to link the poem back into the current chapter we have right now, it might have somehting to do with the Puritan beliefs again. The belief that God owns everything. The person doesn't own anything and God and decide what things stay and not stay. If what i suspect is true, then it might be that the guy wishes to have no belongings of Earth. He just longs for a spot in heaven. Again, i really didn't read the poem so i really don't have any idea what this might actually be about.

Journal Entry 6: Poem About Loss
The judge raises his gun
the tension has begunm
i clinged to the rail
but no shots ringed
steady as i stood
heart pounding as i waited
the gunshot did not ring
splash
as i went in the water
humiliation creeps up
humiliated, i glanced across the crowd
the judge glanced back at me
with disappointeing gaze
a icy feeling creep over me
as the judge talks to me
i see the trophy leaving me
i see the fame starting to disappear
as i realize i was disqualified
my heart sunk
my thoughts regathered
my confidence stronger
i hold on to the rail once again
my mind grew sharper
as the gunshot rang, i feel my muscle loosens up
the world seemed to stopped
i see my shadow in the next lane
heart pounding, muscle tensing, trying to swim past my old self
Bam
i won, against my old limits
the tension has begunm
i clinged to the rail
but no shots ringed
steady as i stood
heart pounding as i waited
the gunshot did not ring
splash
as i went in the water
humiliation creeps up
humiliated, i glanced across the crowd

Journal Entry 5: Guilt
No, thats major public humuiliation, dam i would hate that. I haven't really read that much about the reactions of Hester Prynne, only to the part where she saw her husband and the sign fingers. I'm not sure if she felt guilty about this event, but i beleive not really. The feeling of guilt is a complicated thing, the first 5 times of doing something new and its bad will feel guilt. Once you go past a set amount of number for doing bad stuffs, you get numb and no more guilt rises. I feel guilt when arguing with my mom or dad. No matter what we fight about, it usually just fades away or i will still do what they want. I would feel guilt when i secretly buy cloths. Like a pair of jeans acan make me feel guilty, guilty to my own heart of saving money. i have always wanted to save money, but when you have your jeans completly ripped, you need a new pair of jeans or i have nothing to wear. During those times, buying a pair of jean makes me feel guilty because i disobeyed my own ideas. Leaving my homeworks on the side and play games first also makes me feel guilty. I don'y know why, most of the things that i would feel guilty are the things that contradicts my own code of honor (something like that). There's another thing that i would feel guilty of, that's when i didn't accomplish a task that my friends told me to do. I can feel guilty about that for a long time. It feels incomplete, therefore i would do something extra to make it up to them.

Journal Entry 4: Puritan Poetry
After reading the poem for the fourth time, i still had the same impression that i saw last time. Anne believe that humans are here in earth to suffer, well that's what i felt. The suffering of mankind is a test to see if you can handle the entertianments luking all around you. To the puritans, pleasure in life is like sin, you shall not be into pleasure or you will go to hell. In the poem of Anne, she was unafraid (or that she didn't describe) the hardships that lies infront of her for rebuilding her home. It seems to me as if she might even be happy about the fact that she lost all her belongings, in relating to the philosophical ideas of the Puritans. Since the puritans view all leisures as the sins of men and only God's grace can save us. As it spins around the belief that you have to "feel" God's grace, possibly Anne can even view the loss of all her things as God's grace. God burned down all her goods, as a token for her well being of a women, away from leisures in life. Having her goods all burnt away, Anne might even think that the fire was the Grace of God and be happy about her life. If this was done to me, boy i would be mad. However, with the deists and the rationalists, they won't even bother to think about the grace of God. Definitely no poems will be written, the place would be like a CSI crime case. They will be identifiing the evidence of the burnt site and who might have done it. They believe in the fact that Goed would not interfere in their lives, then there would be no reason for God to take away their stuff, it would contradictory to the purpose of making this world. My poem would be about sorrow at first, but then view it as a adventure. Well, actually it depends on the time, if it was modern times, i would be pissed, and then call agents or insurances. If it was at that time, i will have to build my little fire with skills i learnt from books, build my quick little house with trees, find a cave to hide from the cold. It would paleolithic era again.

Journal Entry 3: No Big Thing
To start this journal, i have to say that today's event is the opposite from my last journal. The last journal was about me suffered in a car accident in extremem horrific circumstances. Today, is the actual event that happened to my small car crash of me and my friend's family. It started from us driving down a crossroad while me and my friends were chatting. When we cross the street with our car, a car rammed from the side into us. It may sound incredibly dangerous, but the actual event was just a loud noise, and then nothing else. I was sitting on the side of the door that was hit, i just shook a little bit and it was over. We parked our car at the side to examine the damage while my friend's mom called for agents. The one who rammed into us was a Mexican family i believe. Im not being racist, just clarifying who hit us. While we waited for the agents, the family was shouting and talking in mexican, and we were quite puzzled as they fought quite fiercly. Once the agent came, the family started saying how we were wrong for breaking the rules, and that they smashed into our car caused a injury in her grandmother's neck. Well, clearly they were fighting a second before this, so i beleive nmothing really happened. The debate between the agent, police and the family became so interesting, me and my friend went across the street for ice cream cone. We sat down by a little bench beside and look at how the mexican family were talking with hand gestures, saliva flying everywhere, clearing things out. It was quite hilarious, but it really isn't a event that you would tell your friend to for significant. That was the reason why i never bought it up.

Journal Entry 3: Possessions
Anne was positive to the situation where she basically lost everything. She wasn't pessimistic about the situation, she wasn't hating God or crying till her eyes will bleed. She accepted the cherished idea during that time and believed it was just for God to take away her stuff. I don't agree with that, some of these are hard earned items that you devoted yourself into. If God gave you a house out of nowhere, then i believe there is a right in taking it. However, she worked for the house and the possesions inside it( I Believe she did), then that leaves God in no position to take away something that is solely hgers. To me, my most prized mutual possesion is taste. If i can't taste or smell anything, that is like taking the fun in my life completly. Food, is the one thing i must absolutly have. If we're talking about something that we own, then that would be my comics book. It serves me in every aspects, it can make me cry, it can make me laugh, it can make me feel energetic, it can do alot of things. Most of all, it gives me creativity, the artworks and story inside comics book is what opens my life. If i don't have comic books, i really don't know where i can get all of my ideas for games, paintings, drawings, or any sort of creativity ideas. In fact, i worked hard for my collection of comic books. Life without possessions is a painful route, one must have real courage and spirit to stick to an idea like this.

Rationalism v Puritanism
The puritans believed that all people are born bad. The only thing that can save us is the grace of God. The rationalist believed in reasoning, they believed that God will not interefere with the world. God created the world, and he will stand aside and that the worldto run on its own. They don't believe in the fact that praying would make a change to the world. Logics are everywhere in the world and it can solve the problems of the world.
People thay are asd devoted to religion as to the puritains are not as much in modern days as to people in the columbian times. I believe that people can find a spiritual support in religion, we don't consider ourselves as sinners the minute we are born . The religion extremist probably beleive ythe same wat. The extremists now range from muslims to chritians and all religions. The tarionalists are kind of aetheist in a way that God doesn't exxisty to them now. The rationalists are growing in number. To some extent, they believe that reasons can solve everything. For me, i don't beling in the aethesist. I believe that religion and beliefs are a kind of spiritual support. However, i'm not like the puritans that believe we are all sinners and born evil. I also don't believe in the idea that chritianiyu is yhr only True Belif, that's a false idea. Hacving a bit of faith and spiritual support to the world around us or life could help a person through alot of things. It can solve stress, emotional breakdowns and sometimes things in life that you just can't do anything about it. It can give a person invisible strengths.

A New Nation
I believed that the puritans are pretty high in self esteem, and quite riud as well. Our founding fathers might also be proud as well, but we're not sure if they are like that to the Indians. I believe that, to some extent they did fulfill their manifest destiny. Their manifest destiny was to stretch from shing sea to shining sea. They did, but as to the purpose and how they did it, i don't think Jesus is going to be proud about them. In the ten commandmants of christianity, one of the specific commandmant was "Thou shall not kill". The fact that we were pushing the indians away from their settlements and slaughtering them with our advance weapons ir not something that Jesus or God himself want to see. God and Jesus's sole purpose is to come down and save people, i believe that believe in the fact of world peace as well. Our manifest destiny led us off the original track of God, and led us into another misleading trail that involves slaughter and discrimination. On the surface, we did accomplish what "we", the americans believe that we did. As of the big picture of the whole himan race, we should not be proud of what we did.
The faith of the Puritans were strong, they beleived that chritianity was the only religion and the only truth. They portrays the native Americans as heretics, their belief of different Gods as heresies. I believe that's wrong, what gives our ancestors in the U.S the power to declare them as unjust and uncoventional? It contradicts of what we believed in, the freedom of speech. It was as if that was all a big lie, our past in the American history was quite a failure, the history of the Native Americans are extremely tragic, the tortures and the abandoning their homes without choice, and etc. These are all harsh past of our ancestors, the puritans are ignorant people, to think of themselves so high up.
